Turning On Grading Workflow and Grading Allocation

The Grading Workflow Setting – Under “Grade” in Assignment Settings

Navigate to the course you wish to view in VSTAR Learn and select the “Assignments” link in the Activities block on the right side of the course page. All of the Assignments for the particular class will appear in a list. Click on the assignment whose settings you wish to change. The Assignment Setting is normally collapsed in the Administration block. Click “Edit settings” from the Administration block. Scroll down and and click to expand the “Grade” heading and you will be able to see the information pictured below.

By default, VSTAR Learn does not use grading workflow or grading allocation.

If “Use grading workflow” is enabled, grades will go through a series of workflow stages before being released to students. This allows for multiple rounds of grading and allows grades to be released to all students at the same time. The grader will have various options when grading the student’s assignment, such as “begun grading”, “grading in progress”, and “completed grading,” For our purposes here, we have set “Use grading workflow” to yes.

We have also set “Use grading allocation” to yes.  This allows us to set a specific grader for each student. This option is not required, but if, for example, a group has multiple graders, the individual grading a particular assignment within the group can be noted on the grading page.

Grading with Marking Workflow

When grading an assignment, there are several options for the “Grading workflow state”:

  • “Not graded” – a grade has not been entered and marking had not yet begun
  • “In grading” – a grader is working on grading the submission
  • “Graded” – the grader has graded the submission
  • “In review” – a course director is reviewing the submission
  • “Ready for release” – a course director has approved the submission
  • “Released” – grades have been released to the students

The “Allocated Grader” is a drop down list that selects from a list of approved graders for the course.  The grader should select his or her name as they grade the assignment.
