Understanding Question Bank Categories

The Question Bank has four categories:  Quiz, Course, Category, and System.

“System” Category

Any questions saved to this category would be visible throughout VSTAR Learn.  Any course could use these questions.  Whether or not you can see or save questions to this category depends on your role in the system.

“Category” Category

Any questions saved to this category would be visible to other courses in this category.  For example, if you created an HBA question and saved it here, other FMK courses could also access it – it could theoretically be used by colleagues in Homeostasis.  Also, if you want to use this question next year in HBA, you could copy it from the category and apply it to next year’s quiz.  It allows you to share questions from year to year without affecting previous or future test scores if the question needs to be altered.

Best practice tip:  Save to the “Category” Category so that it is easier to use your questions again in future sessions of the same course.

“Course” Category

Questions created and saved to this category are visible throughout the course. An advantage here is that a course can be re-used on a future exam, but that also works if questions are saved to the “Category” category.  If you just save to the “Course” category, though, it is more difficult to use exam questions in future years, especially if some modifications need to be made to those questions.

“Quiz” Category

Questions saved to this category would only be available for that specific quiz.  If you wanted to use that question in the future, you would have to create it again from scratch.
