A user can be granted privileges to perform specific tasks within a course, such as grading or creating new content or taking quizzes. Those privilges are bundled together into logical units called roles.
VSTAR Learn grants users different access to a course depending upon the user’s role. For example, the two most obvious roles are Faculty and Student. Users who are Faculty for a course will be able to add/edit content and access the gradebook; users who are Students won’t be able to add/edit content and will only see their own grades when viewing the gradebook.
There are eight possible roles.
- Resident – coming soon
- Small Group Facilitator – Typically, this role is used in classes that have smaller breakout groups. If these groups require an instructor to grade assignments specific to that group, then that individual should be assigned the small group facilitator role. This individual will only be able to view grades for their small group. The small group facilitator is not able to edit the course.
- Student – This it he default role for anyone enrolled in VSTAR Learn. Students can access and participate in a course.
- Faculty – Anyone assigned to a course with this role is able to view but not edit the course. This person can see any course material in the past and future, but not grades. Primarily, this role is used for preparing for lectures. The faculty role cannot edit courses. Someone with this role who needs to contribute to quizzes, assignments, or resources in a course should make submissions to the course coordinator.
- Course Coordinator – This is a staff member who has full editing rights to a course. The individual with this role works hand-in-hand with the course directors and faculty involved in a course. A Course Coordinator can enroll additional students, faculty, and facilitators.
- Course Director – In the VSTAR Learn catalog, this is the name(s) that appear below the course name. These individuals are the faculty responsible for the course. These faculty have full editing rights. Manual grading responses are anonymous for this role. These individuals can enroll additional students, faculty, facilitators.
- EdTech Admin – Ed Tech Admins have full editing rights. These individuals can create courses, and users, as well as backup and restore files. Ed Tech Admins can enroll any role in a course, as well as groups of users.
