NBME Exam Prep

 

LAPTOP REQUIREMENTS:

  • Operating systems:
    • Windows 7 – 10
    • macOS 10.8 – 10.12
  • System:
    • 1GHz Processor or higher
    • 13-inch or larger display, with minimum 1024×768 resolution
    • Wireless ­g or higher
  • Browsers:
    • Windows – Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10, 11; Chrome 34 or higher; Firefox 29 or higher
    • macOS – Safari 5.1.9 or higher; Chrome 34 or higher; Firefox 29 or higher
    • Enable JavaScript, Cookies, and CSS (these are usually enabled by default)
    • Disable pop-up blockers
  • Not supported:
    • iOS and Android devices
    • Virtual machines
    • Netbooks
    • Chromebooks
    • Linux

BEFORE EXAM DAY:

  • Run all Windows updates, or macOS updates 
  • Update your web browser to latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari
  • All macOS users – create a Parental Control/managed account
  • Login to the parental control account you setup
  • Be sure you can connect to vuNet
    • Windows
    • Mac
    • If you have problems doing this, turn your wireless off and back on, and try again
  • Know how to boot up in Safemode as a reference if needed, but it is not required to boot up in Safemode.
  • Download and run the latest NBME Secure Browser (https://wbt.nbme.org/exam)
    • If you get the “unidentified developer” message, click Ok, then control-click the secure browser app again, click Open, then Open again
  • Run the Workstation Certification
    • If you receive a message that you have had too many failed attempts, you can come by the EDT office, and we will help you get logged in
  • Step through the tutorial
  • Take the Practice Exam
  • Notify EDT of any issues (EDT.Support@vanderbilt.edu)

 

ON EXAM DAY:

  • Bring your laptop and power adapter
  • All macOS users need to login to your parental control account you setup for NBME exams
  • All Windows users should close all running applications on their device
  • Connect to vuNet
  • Download the latest NBME Secure Browser (https://wbt.nbme.org/exam)
  • The Chief Proctor will read the rules
  • When filling out your info:
    • ID = Commodore ID on your green sheet
    • Workstation ID = the number on your cabinet (410 LH)  or on the post next to your seat (202 LH & 214 LH)

POTENTIAL ISSUES:

  • Wi-Fi is typically the only problem you will have
    • If you lose Wi-Fi during the exam, your timer will pause
    • After a few seconds, it should automatically reconnect.
  • Security error at the beginning – recording device detected
    • macOS users, be sure you are logged in to your parental control account
    • Windows users, you may need to boot into Safe Mode to force your camera to shut off
